Soup joumou is a tasty and a traditional Haitian dish. This soup has a historic aspect
because during the time of colonization, slaves were not allowed to eat it. It was only eaten by the colonizers. Once we became a free and independent nation, soup joumou became the traditional dish served on January 1st. It commemorates the day of Haiti's independence from France in 1804 and our freedom.
It's made with ingredients such as joumou ( pumpkin) meat (i.e. beef) or without meat (for vegetarians), cabbage, carrot, celery, potato, yam and pasta.
To celebrate its freedom, Haitian people eat soup joumou aech Independence Day ( New year's day).
